It's been a long time since i've played Gaia. The first time I signed up, I didn't really understand it and i'm not sure if i've been back since.
Like TirNua, upon registration you get the choice of being male, female or animal. For each of these, you get a choice of 3 avatars - which you can change later. To be honest, all the options looked weird, so I decided to be a male on here, too. I named myself after Icarut because of one of the avatar options but it gave me a different one for some reason - so I look like Hawkeye - i'll change that as soon as I can..
You aren't given an introduction of any sort, so you have to find out what to do on your own accord. There is a button on the main page to take a tour but i'm too lazy for that, haha.
Most of Gaia takes part on the actual website rather than a game which is pretty boring in my opinion. I just spent all my Gaia Gold trying to look more like Icarut, but some of the changes I got charged for, but the actual changes weren't made which is pretty annoying. Oh well. I couldn't afford both a top and bottoms so I just bought Icarut a dress... Yep.
Rather than spending more time on the website, I decided to see what the actual game part is like. I tried going into Town1 but it gave me an error and told me to contact support, so I tried Town2 instead. You click the ground to move, and the screen moves around with you as you move. There isn't an actual walk motion, your legs just kind of get smudged(?).

Walking is really slow, and can be pretty awkward because if you walk into something, you stop moving and become unable to move, so you have to go back and go around it manually rather than the game doing it for you like most virtual worlds.
Back to the website - there are several games that you can play, i'm guessing that's how you earn more Gaia Gold. As well as having your own avatar, you get an aquarium, house, car, and you can customize your own profile.
In all honesty, I don't see why this game is as popular as it is. Though Gaia has existed since 2003 and is still alive - so there must be quite a player base behind it. I'm guessing players who have been on it for a while are the type who vow to never leave(?) since you get that a lot on virtual worlds.
I'd most likely only be able to play this if my friends were on it too, since it's very boring to play alone. It's definitely not my type of thing. Maybe i'm not giving it a long enough chance but i've already had enough. (shrugs)
